1995 DT125R
This is the only unrestored bike on the site, this DT was originally purchased to strip as a parts bike however when I went to collect it she was showing an unbelievable 1066 miles on the clock. After a chat with the previous owner it turns out that it was stolen and then recovered after being missing for a few days back in 1995 when it was only around 2 months old. When it was returned it had a few minor parts missing and has never been back on the road since.
It was then passed through a few friends all with good intentions of doing the minor repairs that were needed to replace the missing parts but it ended up sitting in a barn for years on the farm that I got it from with only the tail light getting replaced and that was about it so she is a true barn find as they say.
It would have been a crying shame not put such an original nice low mileage bike back where it belongs on the road, so as you can see that's what I have done. It only took a few hours or so after I had the parts at hand to have her up and running finished and back on the road again.
In the end she got a full set of brand new genuine Yamaha bodywork save for the rear side covers that are pattern, I replaced the bodywork even though the originals were good the decals where damaged and half missing from the theft and there was some scratching etc from storage, I also fitted a new seat cover in the correct for 1995 Purple colour. All the correct decals have now all been replaced with new genuine Yamaha items at a cost of silly money " Mr Yamaha you should be ashamed at the price you charge for decals" it still needs one decal for the N/S rear side cover to finish but at £75 it can wait a while for now and its a special back order part anyway. The carburettor has also been rebuilt and a new used fuel tank with brand new filler cap has been fitted as the original tank was slightly rusted inside due to being stood unused for such a long time, the replacement tank has been refinished in 2K gloss black and has a better deeper finish than a genuine new tank would have. The rear subframe has been replaced with a brand new item. The rack, tail light, mirrors, indicators and hand guards have also all been replaced. The rear brake calliper has been rebuilt with a new genuine Yamaha piston and seal kit as it was sticking slightly so now shes ended up a virtually brand new bike again. She fired up with 3 kicks after a full service when the carburettor was refitted and now runs like you would expect a 1000 mile bike would.
It really is a real time warp condition bike and im really happy with the end results. I will probably end up keeping it for the summer to nip around town on at the weekends as how often do you come across an as new original condition 1995 DT with just over 1000 miles on the clock ? You don't ..!
The first three pictures are of the bike as it was when I bought it, you can see from the picture of the front wheel and forks that it looked in as new condition under the grime, that was the picture that made me buy the bike.
The rest of the pictures are of just some of the new bits and bobs that have gone onto the bike to get her back to new again and what she looks like now, unrestored and completely original even down to the paint on the exhaust. Yes there are a few tiny marks here and there but that just shows the bikes originality and after all it is 18 years old but its still a brand new bike as it would have left the factory that does not require restoration. I might just might re finish the exhaust front pipe but why its rust and dent free and the paint burns of at the manifold within 10 minutes even on a day old bike anyway so why bother. If I remove the restrictor I will refinish it then probably.
The only things that are not fitted in the pictures of the finished bike at the bottom of the page are the L/H mirror and 2 captive nuts and screws that secure the lower part of the tank panels, they have now been fitted. I do have the L/H mirror and will fit it if I ever decide to sell her but I only use the R/H mirror so that's why its not fitted for now anyway.
